MIMIKRY
2025, 195 x 155 cm, Mixed Media

Marie Miklus graduated from the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 2026, having studied under Thomas Scheibitz. At the heart of her artistic practice lies the fundamental tension that arises between chance and control during the painting process. To explore this interplay, she draws on a diverse range of techniques: she integrates monotype, grattage and printmaking into her paintings and employs methods of automatic and collaborative drawing.
Her creative process begins with an intense, physical interaction with the medium: she first places the canvas on the floor and works whilst sitting directly over it, as close to the picture as physically possible. Only in a second stage is the canvas hung up, whereupon a highly associative process of interpretation begins. From the random structures of the background, she deliberately carves out creatures and figures in order to consciously bring these beings to life. As the work slowly takes shape, individual elements of the picture become imbued with symbolic meaning. Marie Miklus relies on a colour ambivalence: bright, almost cheerful complementary colours draw the viewer’s gaze, only to reveal something unsettling or uncomfortable in the very next moment.
Her artistic practice draws equally from inner contradictions – at the points of rupture where pain is distorted into the grotesque and tenderness reveals a monstrous facet – as well as from the realms of psychology, narrative and myth. She deliberately explores the space where the personal and the collective converge. The resulting works remain deliberately open-ended and resist a single, unambiguous narrative. Through this dialogue, the viewers’ individual interpretations – shaped by their own experiences and cultural backgrounds – flow back into the work, only to resurface in ever-changing forms.
